1. Build Your Portfolio.
The first thing I think every web designer should have is a online portfolio of their web/graphic design work. Building a portfolio will show off your creativity and knowledge to clients. Also if web design clients wanted to refer you to other businesses for work and they will know where to view your projects.
2. Give your client more then you say you would.
I have worked with many small business owners personally and the key to building a successful partnership is give your client more then what they bargained for. The client will appreciate what you did and will come back to you for more business in the future.

One of the most important things to remember is to meet deadlines. Having a client project done on time is very important in this business of freelancing.
